Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Industrial Refrigeration Pros, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on our environment and society. Our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles guides our business practices, ensuring that we contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

Sustainable Refrigeration Solutions

Green Refrigerants: Ammonia and CO2

One of the core ways we fulfill our ESG commitment is through the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants. Our refrigeration systems utilize green gases such as ammonia and carbon dioxide (CO2). These refrigerants are far safer for the environment than traditional options like Freon (chlorofluorocarbons), as they have zero ozone depletion potential and significantly lower global warming potential. By choosing these eco-friendly refrigerants, we help reduce the carbon footprint of our clients while safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Unlocking the Potential of CO2

Why Use CO2 Today

CO2, designated as an A1 refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1 and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), possesses exceptional thermophysical properties ideal for refrigeration systems. As a non-proprietary natural refrigerant, CO2 is readily available from local gas suppliers at competitive prices, facilitating its widespread adoption. Moreover, its usage carries no long-term pollution liability, as any leaks can naturally dissipate over time, and remaining charges can be efficiently utilized or reused. With no looming phase-down or phase-out obligations, CO2 emerges as a future-proof solution for refrigeration needs. Additionally, the utilization of CO2 heat recovery in industrial plants offers substantial benefits, including significant energy savings, reductions in carbon footprint, and alignment with net-zero commitments

CO2 System Applications

There is a diverse range of CO2 system applications across various industries, which include

  • Warehouse/Distribution centers
  • Supermarkets
  • Ice Rinks
  • Food Processing & Pharmaceutical cooling
  • Data centers, HVAC
  • Heat Pumps (district heating, other)
  • Cannabis plants & extraction systems

CO2 Challenges & Solutions

Challenges

  • Higher initial equipment cost than with HFCs
  • Designs are more complex than with HFCs
  • Higher pressure components, piping and valves required
  • Energy efficiency penalties when operating TC for long periods
  • Hot/humid climate sones result in increased TC runtime
  • Availability of trained technicians with knowledge of the technology

Solutions

  • Government grants for new projects with natural refrigerants & energy efficient systems
  • Carbon credits for plant remodels or new plants with natural refrigerants along with HFC reclamation and more
  • CO2 technology continuously evolving (parallel compression, ejectors, pressure reducers, availability of parts in North America, etc.)
  • Adiabatic cooling (reduces TC hours significantly)
  • Training programs, online of in-person, start-up assistance, after-sale monitoring services

CO2 Refrigeration

Crucial Insights

  • Regulatory cost and burden are significantly reduced
  • Reduced energy cost by using intelligent and efficient heat recovery
  • Reduced cooling water usage when combined with adiabatic gas cooler
  • No water treatment
  • No sewer cost
  • Significant reduction in maintenance cost
  • Semi-hermetic compressors do not require shaft seal replacement
  • Direct drive ECM fans do not require belt maintenance
  • Increase revenue generating square footage by eliminating engine room
  • Less risk to stored product in event of a refrigerant leak
  • Environmentally friendly, future-proof, natural refrigerant that costs $1/lb. on average
