Cannabis and CBD Safe Storage
Like any fresh product, it’s crucial to store cannabis and CBD products in a way that keeps them fresh, maintains their integrity, and extends their shelf life. If you’re building a grow room, distribution center, or cannabis cold storage facility, you know how important it is to get everything right, from construction onward.
Growing legalization of marijuana across the country and worldwide has prompted the cannabis industry into unprecedented growth. In 2019, the global legal marijuana market was valued at $17.7 billion, with forecasted growth of over 18%. Sales of legal cannabis in the United States amounted to almost $10 billion, with over $345 million of tax revenue collected in California alone. Revenue from legal marijuana is forecasted to reach $73 billion by 2027, with the CBD market hitting $22 billion by 2022.
Estimated demand for recreational cannabis in the United States is poised to overtake video games firearms, Netflix, and McDonalds. And no wonder, with medical marijuana legal in 33 states, recreational marijuana in 11, and hemp-derived CBD products legal across the United States.
With such massive growth on the horizon, cannabis and CBD providers are looking toward quality cannabis cold storage and grow room construction to meet this surge in demand.
Proper storage of cannabis and CBD products can maintain freshness, prevent THC loss, and ensure long-term viability. Cannabis and CBD products are susceptible to moisture and humidity, heat, exposure to light and direct sun, mildew and mold, bugs, and other sources of contamination, all of which can affect the usability and effectiveness of your products. At room temperature, THC deterioration in marijuana alone can reach nearly 17% in a year, compared to around 5% with refrigeration and less than 4% in deep freeze conditions.
The best way to store cannabis and CBD products depends on a number of factors, including product type, moisture levels, and length of storage. While storing cannabis in a freezer is the most reliable means of long-term storage, products in deep freeze can be affected by moisture and brittleness. For short-term storage, refrigeration is the recommended solution. This should be combined with appropriate storage materials — for example, vacuum sealing marijuana or using gas like carbon dioxide or nitrogen can eliminate moisture, while storage in dark, opaque glass, metal, or plastic containers avoids contamination by direct light. And CBD oil and other products behave differently in cold storage than raw cannabis, which means it may need its own unique storage solutions.
